Sparkling the Heart of Fordham a Huge Success Despite Rain

Not even the rain could dampen the spirits of nearly 1,500 Bronx residents who came out for the 9th Annual Sparkling the Heart of Fordham on December 6th, 2013. Despite the weather, families lined up to meet Santa Claus, see the tree lighting, hear the Gloria Dei choir, and take their chance at winning a raffle prize. In spite of the chilly rain, the holiday spirit was contagious.

Sparkling the Heart of Fordham also kicked off the annual Fordham Road discount shopping program. Shoppers took advantage of discounts at nearly 70 unique Fordham Road businesses to complete their holiday shopping, from national chains to local retailers. What a fantastic way to celebrate the holidays in the Bronx's busiest shopping district!

Fordham Road and Arthur Avenue featured in Neighborhood x Neighborhood

Fordham Road and Arthur Avenue have been selected as the next destination to be featured in Neighborhood x Neighborhood, an ongoing communications campaign designed to spotlight local businesses in all five boroughs and encourage consumers to explore areas of the City outside of traditional tourist locations. It highlights an array of cultural, shopping and dining activities to see and do in our own Bronx neighborhood.

Visit NYC & Company's webpage for itineraries, maps and helpful information to navigate the hidden gems of our city.

                                                    FORDHAM FEVER FRIDAY

Fordham BID held the last Fordham Fever Friday of this year on October 4th at Muller Park. The theme was International Day Fair, including continental cuisines and artifact displays; children were able to play in a bouncy house and fun bus. Participants received exclusive deals and discounts just by showing up! Shoppers were also able to receive free giveaways that ranged from books, tote bags, and so much more. Be sure to check back to see when Fordham Fever Fridays will resume next May.

                                                  BRAVE UNDER THE STARS

Brave was the last movie of the summer that was shown at Fordham Plaza in September. The movie was chosen through our Facebook page via media vote. There was great turnout from the community; people brought blankets, chairs, snacks, etc. all to view the free showing of Brave. Some onlookers were even shocked to see the gigantic inflatable screen in the middle of Fordham Plaza. Although the summer movie event series is over, the Fordham Road BID will continue to host community events as community spaces become available.

The movie series was made possible by the BID Challenge Grant through the New York City Department of Small Business Services.

Acclaimed children's author Britt Menzies, creator of the StinkyKids series, visited Fordham Road daycare 1199SEIU Child Care Corp April 19th. Menzies visited Pre-K classrooms, read from and signed her books, and visited with local parents. Menzies was a big hit with the children, teaching them to "always be a leader of good." Each child received copies of Menzies' books as part of the BID's Literacy Program in conjunction with NYC Councilman Joel Rivera to promote early childhood reading in Bronx children.
